Gardening has taken over just like COVID-19. In an NPR article, “Fearing Shortages, People are Planting More Vegetable Gardens,” released March 27, 2020, George Ball, owner of Burpee Sead Company, explains how his seed sales have spiked during the pandemic. He discusses how during most of the economic crises, seed sales go up. He gives examples of the stock market crash of 1987, the dot-com bubble burst of 2000, and even during the two oil crises of the 1970s.

On the other hand, some people are starting gardens because they are home all day and want a hobby. While doing so, they take to social media to show off their homemade gardens. Some are even using social media to teach others how to locate their inner “green thumb.”

On YouTube, Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy have blown up since they started using their channel for gardening back in 2016. They went from about 20,000 subscribers before the pandemic to now has around 116,000. They show viewers how to garden easily without spending too much money. From garden tours to growing tips, they inspire those at home to get excited about gardening.

In their video, “How To Grow Garlic EASY Guide Tricks,” Harris shows how to plant and grow garlic bulbs in your home and how to transfer them outside easily. She uses everyday

items, like plastic bottles and napkins or glass bowls for initial planting. Once sprouting, she moves them to a prepped pot outside to let them continue growing. It’s a simple and quick way to grow your own garlic at home.

Every time we log on social media and see a picture of our friend’s garden, we experience the gardening boom. Will it last?
